How to specify a friction stay: arm length, load and opening angle

滑撑怎么选:臂长、承重与开启角度

Selection guideFriction stay

A friction stay is the easiest hardware item to overlook on an outward-opening window, and one of the most likely to cause trouble. Specify it in four steps.

1. Arm length from sash size

Arm length sets both the opening angle and how the load is distributed. A common match: up to 500 mm sash width takes 8 to 10 inch arms, 500 to 700 mm takes 12 inch, 700 to 900 mm takes 14 inch and above 900 mm takes 16 inch. Taller sashes should step up as well.

2. Load rating from sash weight and wind load

An under-rated stay lets the sash sag and stop closing properly over time. Add the weight of glass, profile and hardware, then apply a safety factor for the local basic wind pressure. For high-rise and coastal projects, go one grade up.

3. Opening angle and restriction

Standard stays open to 90 degrees. Where there is a collision risk, a need to limit travel, or a requirement to clean the outside pane, choose a restricted version or an adjustable friction stay.

4. Material and finish

Use SS 304 outdoors, and consider SS 316 for coastal or highly corrosive environments. The finish determines how the product looks after years of service, so do not judge it from a sample shine alone.
